As president of Media Guild of the West, Matt Pearce helped coordinate coalitions of unionized journalists and media workers advocating on journalism jobs legislation including California bills AB 886 (publisher collective bargaining with tech platforms), SB 1327 (data-mining tax on Big Tech) and SB 911 (state-funded public interest journalism grant program).
On behalf of Guild journalists and news workers, and coalitions with other journalist groups and labor unions, Matt also successfully advocated for press protections in SB 98 (protections against arrest for journalists covering protests) and SB 1044 (protections against discipline for workers such as journalists who leave disaster zones for safety reasons).
